I get a similar problem. Double click on the desktop shortcut or the game.exe file, the screen goes black (loading?), a couple of clicks from hard drive, and then nothing, stays like it indefinitely. Log file is below and thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me.

Raikoh - You are definitely experiencing problem with video output - try downloading and reinstalling WMV codecs from the official Microsoft site.

Hmm, suffering much the same problem as Raikoh here, but having tried reinstalling the codecs, changing my video drivers (thought perhaps a problem caused by using the Omega drivers for my Radeon - no such luck), disabling the sound, even tried OpenAL, and used compatibility mode, none of which have worked. I still end up with the black screen of, well, nothingness.

You're also having problems with codecs, and I just can't put my finger on why this happens. Are you using any codec packs? If yes, they might have caused an unreinstallable conflicts. (I've had such troublr myself - had to reinstall Windows... :( that';s the kind of OS it is.) I'd reccomend first uninstalling all the related codecs and OpenAL, rebooting, and installing again from scratch. And check whether "logo_buka.wmv" is present on your hard drive somewhere in the game folder.

I'll give that a go, thanks for the prompt reply! (fortunately I keep my system fairly well ordered, so I should be able to get rid of all my old codecs without too much difficulty)

Ack, even after uninstalling every codec, then reinstalling the game and MS's codecs, I still get the same problem. I get the feeling that I'm not going to get to play it at all :(

As far as i know either way should work, but you might aswell get Windows Media Player 10, at least then you're up to date.

I had the same problem and have just solved it.

I have the ffdshow codec pack installed. When I found out that the problem might be in some codec conflict I just tried disabling WMV1/7 and WMV2/8 codecs from the 'codecs' page of the 'ffdshow video configuration utility' . And it worked out just fine! the game now starts without a problem.

Having the same issue as most of the people here.

Have tried disabling sound.

Have tried running with compatibility windows 2000 and disableing visual themes.

Have installed WMV9 codec, and have updated windows media player 11.

I have OpenAL installed.

There are so many codecs installed into my media player i dont even know where to begin -_- Is there a work around at all??

Here is a list of my codecs from WMP: HELP: ABOUT WMP: Technical Support Information (troubleshoot told me how to find a list of codecs currently installed)

2) Unzip it.
3) Rename file defopenal32.dll into openal32.dll
4) Just copy this openal32.dll into game's main executable folder (where "game.exe" located, check properties of the shortcut).

Hey, I know I am late to the party and all... but I am having the same problem as people in this thread, and after trying all fixes I still can't get the game to start.

- I am using windows 7 32 bit on a notebook
- No log file is created
- When I set the game to run on compatibility mode as is suggested in this thread, there is actually a windows error message. It provides no further details, but says that "files that might describe the problem are: C:\Users\Thomas\AppData\Local\Temp\WER251C.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
C:\Users\Thomas\AppData\Local\Temp\WER4912.tmp.appcompat.txt
C:\Users\Thomas\AppData\Local\Temp\WER4970.tmp.mdmp"
- Installing/uninstalling codecs does nothing

Do you guys still have that modified exe? Is there anything I can do to run it? A pacth maybe? I'm really eager to play it.

You probably have problems with the copy protection like I did. I used a no-cd crack I found for the Russian version and it works now although my version is German.
