I get this message "Error creating sound device" when starting the game.

The log file also has this output

Sun Jan 02 19:25:10 2011: Init: Creating sound system from 'sound.dll'
Sun Jan 02 19:25:10 2011: Default sound device not present
Sun Jan 02 19:25:10 2011: Init: Error creating sound system
Sun Jan 02 19:25:10 2011: Init: Sound manager failed to initialize


Anyone run into this problem?

Computer specs, please?

My initial guess would be that this is a driver issue.
