Aneuron, I don't know... Still working on it, still working on the story.
The situation is too bizarre. I say, I cannot afford a pure creation - it's an investigation actually. So I change the story as long as I continue thinking about the core material.
In that case, best of luck to you and the rest of the team as you continue to work on it!

Anyway, Knock-knock is a minor game. If Pathologic and TheVoid are novels and Cargo! is a play, Knock-knock is a short story. Well... a tale, maybe.
So the story would be interesting but not complicated.

Are there any independent game news outlets that would be worth Ice-Pick contacting? A couple of us have tried drumming up some interest on forums but it has been pretty quiet.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun was the only source.
Could you help us with promoting it further?..

I'd love to. I don't have the authenticity that you as developers have though when contacting a news outlet.

Made topics on gog, gamefaqs, bethesda, bioware, tig source, ttlg and games forum. Mailed indiegames.com recommending the story as I think others have done as well. :)

Encouraged friends to look Knock Knock up as well as checking out other Ice-Pick titles. What can I say... :D Ice-Pick are a developer that I want to see do well.

I wonder if there are European specific sites: German/Polish/Spanish etc that would be worth contacting? My language skills are limited to English however. Unless you include ordering beer in Korean! :D

RPS is the biggest source of information regarding PC gamming and they are keeping an eye on Knock Knock:

Knock-Knock – Ice-Pick Lodge

Goal: $30,000
Now: $10,666
Days: 45

I think it’s interesting to see a studio that’s made a number of games already pitching their goal so relatively low. The creators of Pathologic, The Void, and Cargo return with yet another completely different game. As Alec mentioned this week, even the game’s development background is a deeply creepy tale of fictional weirdness. I could read through the Kickstarter to properly understand what this is, but with Pathologic I’d prefer to just start it and find out. That’s how I first met Pathologic (it was me who found it, not Quintin, ME!!!) and it’s how I want to meet all their games. Just $5 will net you a copy on release.

I’m surprised this hasn’t been quadruple funded already. In fact, I’m surprised Quintin didn’t fund it entirely himself. The Pathologic developers are turning their mad genius to a puzzle platform game, which manages to be disturbing even as a concept, let alone when you see the creepy footage. With so long left it’ll definitely get there. But it’d be great to see this incredible team of genuinely visionary developers getting a ton more than they asked for.

Knock Knock – Ice-Pick Lodge

Goal: $30,000
Now: $23,852
Days: 31

Pathologic devs Ice-Pick have added another $4,000 to their total this week, leaving them with just over $6k to raise and a month to do it – I’m fairly certain this will get funded, and can’t wait to see what mad direction they’ll head in with it.

Pathologic devs Ice-Pick have added another $3,000 to their total this week, leaving them with just over $3.5k to raise. I’m fairly certain this will get funded, and can’t wait to see what mad direction they’ll head in with it.

Again, I’m not really sure what people are waiting for here. Ice Pick Lodge, the creators of Pathologic and The Void, want to make a 2D platformer – that’s when you just tip up your bank account and pour. It’ll definitely get there, probably by next week, but I’m at a loss as to why this isn’t already over $100k.
Hicks did a great job covering a lot of forums and I did cover Giantbomb. I think maybe except Gametraillers I think all the big communities are accounted for.

I do agree with RPS guys those, how this isn't already over 100k is beyond reasoning.

Here is the unoffical thread gathering all the information on the mystery game I could find: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=11426

Hello Hicks! I've send e-mails to (I think) all Polish sites about games. Unfortunetly, only 2 or 3 has responded :(

Hello Hicks! I've send e-mails to (I think) all Polish sites about games. Unfortunately, only 2 or 3 has responded :(
:) If they look at the kickstarter and talk about it, or even better do a write up that's all that matters :D Response emails are always nice though! :)

It was the same case with indiegames.com. A few of us contacted them but they seem reluctant to do write ups of "in progress" kickstarters. It's unfortunate but I can understand why they are taking that stance now. The sheer quantity of kickstarter projects and author specialisms etc.

I took a look round independent games websites last night, the contest sites didn't really seem appropriate and most others either didn't have a forum or seemed to be more industry representative focused. Over to Ice-Pick on that one :D

Wondering if there's a way of submitting story tips to ign? They get a lot of flack I know but they do cover a pretty good and broad sweep of releases. Wide readership also.

Just looking a submissions form (if there is one on gamespot)

There's a basic info request and a pr address. Nothing that I can find on submissions however... :(

Kotaku has already covered :)

A few more questions, if you don't mind!

For Pathologic,
In the Bachelor's ending, where is Daniel? We see Klara and Artemiy in their respective ends.

For The Void,

Has the nameless sister shared a past with the player character? If not, was she a "traditionally" created sister like all the rest, created by the Sleeper, or was she yet another being that ended up in the Void in an unorthodox way?

As you made the game, were there any sisters you wanted to include, but couldn't?

There's no place for him neither in the Polyhedron nor in the "town" whatever is rest of it.
He could have appeared among Maria's worshipers (some were expecting him in this company), but he certainly didn't agree.
His absence in the final is the price he paid for making such a weird world.

I won't tell you. ) This ambiguity has been planned from the very beggining. And I'm very gald that you regard these very possibilities. )

No. Actually there were Sisters whom I wanted to exclude, because I didn't understand them and couldn't recover their role and real place in the Void. )
But they belonged there, so I had to accept the situation as it was... )

Wow, I'm impressed that you show yourself now and like to interact. :)
It's an quantum jump for IPL to spend more time with there community.
Well, Pathologic is the best game experience I've ever had; now Pathologic is a part of my Life, and maybe the Life which I had in Pathologic, changed the Life in my whole Inner-World.
From time to time I think about Pathologic, my dreams are influenced since years by Pathologic (and I feel in love with Aglaja :) Yeah, Burakh is my favorite puppet).
Utopia is not like a game, which want educate people and give them a message, it's more like a self-education, because self-knowledge (that comes from your own mind) is real knowledge- the other typs are only transient gases.
And so it isn't bad, that most of the people don't understand, because they don't understand themselves; they accept the world without asking and thinking.
(Maybe bad for economy)

My English isn't very good and I wrote a long time on it, but I hope that you (the respective Reader) understand and feel, what I want to show.
Stupid, that I can't talk in English, like in my native language...
I'm interested in the russian culture, thinking and language. (I began to learn russian in my free-time- two steps forward, one back, but however it's a fine step forward. - I hope :) )

~

Pathologic
When I walk along the steppe, I hear sometimes a man is talking about something - mute. What is he talking about ?
Also, there is a women singing a song. It's sad that I can't understand anything :/

...oh, some time ago I had written some questions while playing Pathologic and The Void...but now :?

if you have time to answer another question.... since I found out about Pathologic I have been totally engrossed with the atmosphere of the game. Its writing, specific color palette, music and overall story, they all combine perfectly (in my opinion) to form a complete experience.
What I am wondering is did you have specific things that inspired any parts of the game (writng, color palette, plague, etc) or the game itself as a whole? I'm thinking things like: books, films, art pieces/installations, music/sound pieces, dreams, experiences or whatever else you can think of. Or maybe nothing!? Ha ha....

I'm a game reviewer writing a pretty positive review of Pathologic right now. Once that's complete, I'd love to ruthlessly judge a copy of Knock-Knock.

But I also have a question, perhaps not for you, though. Was the architecture of the houses in the game based off of something real? It looks very cool, but also very odd for an isolated civilization, almost too ornate to be real.

Thank you for your words, Voltigam!
Where are you from, by the way?
Quote:

He reads some stories from Baug Meghes, the ritual lore of Steppe Order. These very rhymes about the lines and "the path of logic" (though they didn't know the word "logic" itself, actually there is some term of "binding things together".
Quote:

Neither do I. We made a girl singer to drink some absinth. While she was drinking we were telling her about the Steppe and the Order. Then we asked her to imagine that she is a Steppe Dancer (the nude girl in black rags). In half an hour she closed her eyes and started to sing in their language. That's the story. We never could repeat this experience, so this was the only breakthrough and the only relic of the steppe dialect. )

Well... This is a long story. Actually the answer is "none" - which means that there was no book or song which suddenly made me to see the situation and world of Pathologic. But not exacty so.

Pathologic (in Russian it is called "Pestilence (utopia)") burst out of my "chamber theatrical experiment" named "The Rebellion".

"The Rebellion" was a result of a long evolution of my experiments on D&D sessions. I fell in love with D&D when I was 15 years old - The Iron Curtain fell just a year-or-two ago, so we knew nothing like this before! It was a perfect form for all those dreamers who tried to role-play their invented worlds in a real life. I gathered a company of my old friends and became a "dungeon master". But we couldn't buy any designed modules (thank God for it  ), so I had to invent them myself. I was brought up in a family of theater critics, so since my childhood I spend a lot of time in this environment; my parents worked with the best theater directors in Soviet Union helping them to pull their great performances through the buhrstone of official censorship. So I knew how a theater director works to make a masterpiece.

Very soon I understood that i'm sick of rolling dices and counting whether "a +7 THACO beats a beast with AC 6, if a spell with (-1) etc". I excluded dices from my games and when I was 17, our "sessions" turnes into full-grown chamber plays with a really serous problematic and high requirements to artistic role playing of the character. I called these sessions "nocturnes", because we usually played a short situation in a night.

"The Rebellion" was our last game. It burst out of my passionate reflections about the real possibility of an "ideal country" with an ideal state (a very Russian theme, you know... ). Studying at historical faculty, I searched for such examples, I was analyzing the reasons of eternal failing of such attempts - to create a fine country with noble, honest and sincere rulers which were also artists (forget Nero) and poets! Wilder's "Ides of March" made a great impression on me.

So "The Rebellion" was performing a cosy kingdom with a brilliant ruler at the helm. He wins a terrible war by a miracle, repelling the aggression of terrible enemy; then he restores the country, building towns, creating universities and really recourseful structure of officials. He is a worker and an artist and he is really excited about everything goes so well and his country is turning into a real gem (or rare tree). People love him, but he does his best to stay sane and rejects any attempts to worship him. So, he succesfully walks on the razor edge. Suddenly he is told that a rebellion emerges in a far away town.
He feels insulted! He doesn't understand, why? What the hell do they want?

Being a noble man, before equipping a punitive expedition, he decides to sort it out. He wants to understand. So he sends a party of 5 very different people (nobles, officials and analytics) who must examiine the situation and make their verdict. He says that their desicion will be his decision. So they travel through the country, in the meantime discovering what innovations that young king Alexander has implemented. During this way they have to change their point of view several times, so that on arrival they should hesitate about lots of things...

This was the most complicated of my games. I was also very excited about the plot - like Alexander, I felt that this is the first time I created a real composition! But my "party" didn't share my feelings )). They had no scholarship, being technicians - and I required some "authentic" behavior - every day (this very game was divided into 15 sessions) thay had to solve the matters of life and death, playing people invested with absolute power. So I started to prepare tons of materials for each session to help them. I prepared some visuals, artistic and musical references, I wrote some texts and "letters" from capital they had to receive each day. I kepy it all on my hard drive to show them it all on the monitor during the session.

Very soon I understood that:
1) I don't need the incompetent party any more, addressing to some "ideal player" while working
2) my collection of references looks looks very much like a computer game...

So this was the way to Pathologic. Suddenly I saw it like a "what should it be instead". "The Rebellion" was my invention, a product of my mind. "Pathologic" was something real and separate to me.

Did I answer your question? )

Funny, I don't know much Russian, so I didn't know that мор was a real word. I had always thought that the Russian title was a reference to Thomas More, the author of The Utopia.

Your explanation of The Rebellion was very revealing and interesting, so thanks for that! I started Pathologic about a month ago and loved it for its uniqueness. The story is the best I've experienced in any medium (good job there), and I love the slow, oppressive survival horror mechanics and the genuinely hard decisions that I had to make. I've been thinking about what it does, and I think that it inspired me to expand on its concepts in a game of my own someday.

But your post has me hesitant. Pathologic is something that became of your own mind and experiences. I've always been inspired by the works of others, but it occurs to me that I have a lot of time to think of my own ideas. I may make my own little Pathologic someday, but maybe I'll have an even better idea!

And I'd love to see photos. I can't get enough of Russia.
