'E' - is for interacting with everything: opening doors, talking to people, opening trunks and using any object, that is highlighted, when you look at it. You might also want to consider taking a look at the default controls simply to understand, what else you can do in the game. For example 'Tab' is used to holster and raise your current weapon/empty hands. When you raise your hands some citizens will run from you, especially children, since you'll start to look agressive. Actually, everything is pretty logical in the game - if you are stuck, just try something, that you would do in real life. It might help. )

I will be putting up a total walkthrough and guide as soon as i finish it - it'll take maybe a couple of days more. ) The main tip I can give you for the first day - complete the main quest, it's required to survive on the first day. Also, start playing as the Bachelor - it'll be easier for an unexperienced player. )
