Reading this review is what prompted me to buy Pathologic, a decision I don't regret. Although the final score is somewhat low, it's clear by the text that this game is something unique.

That is a very good review, i see that John Walker is literally torn between two sides, whether he loves the game or whether he hates it, The score he give the game just about shows which side he chose, but reading that would make me buy it also if i already didn't own the game..

When i bought the game, i only bought it 'cause i never heard a thing about it at all, and the blurb on the back of the box looked good, even the shop assistants in the store never played it, or realised it was on the shelves and couldn't explain to me what the game would be like. But i am every bit glad i did make the purchase, i would say it's £25 well spent for me.

same with me...only i read the review on amazon...i have the same love hate feelings about the game...i love the survival aspects of the game...hate the lack of a compass...or street names on the walls of house to help orientation. immersion etc...

and i cannot get past the way the graphics somehow don't gell with the actual (not sure exactly why) game mechanics...too much generic combat as you get near the end..(tho the AI is fractionaly better than oblivion which it seems to resemble)...
me i wanted to concentrate on the desease probems rather than constantly avoiding human enemys..and the day by day main objectives become too rigid for me..i would rather the time limit for achieving these goals was randomised....i must admit that i gave up trying to figure out who to trust in the storyline and just behaved randomly towards the characters...it didnt seem to make any difference in the end as long as the adherants survived..no idea what was going on..

but in spite of that it is a far better game than most around at the moment..i havent felt motivated to play the second scenario tho after some time...

I'm not yet very far through the Bachelor scenario (day 3) but the approach I'm taking is to trust no-one but manipulate everyone. Perhaps by later in the game I'll be forced to choose an alleigance, which would be a tough choice, but for now I'm happy to keep myself above their petty squabbles.

That's not the only way - you can also play the role of the character. )

The Eurogamer review is also what prompted me to buy the game. Well, that and the wonderful movie from E3 2005.

It's a well-written, insightful and passionate review. The only thing I don't get is why the writer thinks the graphics are *so bad*. He acknowledges the game's artistic merits, but criticizes everything else about the visuals, even complaining about blocky textures. I really don't get that. I thought the game engine did a pretty good job, and one of the best things was that practically all of the textures were very high resolution.

I do agree that the rain effects were pretty unconvincing, though

Also, the writer keeps saying the game is 'broken.' He says he loves the music but that it's 'broken.' However, he never properly explains why he thinks *everything,* even down to the music is 'broken.'

Ah well... It was a mostly positive review, and I think it got quite a few people to buy the game. Which is a good thing
