Hello,

I've just started to play Pathologic and I am really enjoying it - despite only being on day one, and with the vague notion that I don't really understand what I'm doing.

I have read in another thread that The LxR is working on an update to clarify some of the English translation and in light of this my question is: should I continue to play with the current version or should I wait for the translation update so I can follow the themes better and get the most out of the game the first time I play through?

Is the update likely to be around soon? I would be profoundly grateful (and very impressed) if it was.

Once again, a fantastic game and certainly a significant pace in the right direction for the whole medium.

I advise you NOT to wait for my translation update and start playing now - the update is made in the reverse order - from day 12 and descending - and will be released day by day. Since I'm doing it in my free time, and there are hell a lot of texts in this game, I can't promise to release the entire translation soon, though, I'll try to finish the 11 and 12-th day within two or three weeks.

I'm really glad to hear that a translation update is underway. I tried the game for just a couple of hours, and the overall impression was, well -- mostly confusing. I just hope the translating is moving forward, and want to send out a big thanks to LxR for spending his free time doing this. You're the man, man! :)

Please, leave the thanks until after I release it. ;) It looks like everytime I say that it'll be done soon, God thinks I have too mush free time, and keeps me busy with something else.

Hi all,

Have had the game a week or so and am really hooked.... terrific and original concept and amazingly atmospheric.

But... it really needs those translation patches, and I'm another who would be very pleased to see them at some stage (I appreciate you aren't getting paid for this, and that time is always limited). It's sad, but the awful English 'translation' almost, if not quite, spoils an otherwise perfect game.

I have to ask, why on earth did nobody let a native English speaker have a look at it before release?

It's a long and sad story - let's just say the translation process didn't go as swiftly as it should have because of staff rotation. Plus I'm sorry to say that, but I won't be able to do anything for a month or even two - my semiterms have almost besan, and the exams will be in January... (

Hey LxR I just popped in to say that I'm another one that anxiously awaits for your new translation. I've just started to play the game and the translation is killing it ... it's obvious that it was made by using systran (or something like that) without any real knowledge of the actual language...

It's a shame that the developers and publishers haven't released a patch with a comprehensive use of the English language and that only you are doing something unofficially. I mean buying this game in english is a rip-off since most of the conversations are translated into complete nonsense

Only the english voice is done right, so who wrote those dialogs? Obviously someone who knew some elementary english... ( I would really like to see those english voice actors to try and speak some of the written translated content  )

Anyway , thank you for doing this on your spare time and good luck with your exams :P

Just out of interest - is this still going ahead or is it a lost cause?
EDIT: And naturally I hope you did well in your exams ;)

It's kind of in a frozen state, but I'm not giving up hope, that i'll have enough time to continue on with it... )
The thing is, that I'm doing the AI for the new project and some other stuff as well as study in a University, so I have quite a tight schedule right now... (

There are kind of many questions regarding this subject asked via PM, so I guess I'll just answer here - I'm sorry, but there will be no translation update, since a lot has happened and I'm unable to work on it now. But I will ensure, that our next project will be translated professionally with good QC.
That is all.

Is this still the official answer - that there will be no translation update..? I've started to play the game and am intrigued, but I don't think I'll be able to continue it when I can't understand the dialogue. :(

The update was supposed to be unofficial from the very beginning - it was something I was doing in my own free time which i incedentally ran out of, so, the answer to your question is no, it's not the official answer. Most likely, I won't be doing an update, since I'm busy working on our studio's the next project - trust me, the translation of the next one will surely turn out cognitable. ))

Ah, okay.. it's definitely good to know that you're working on the next release. :) Would it be possible for you to request that someone else in the studio who has more time update the translation?

In fact updating the translation requires quite good knowlegde of language, especially with texts like Pathologic has. I believe it is the thing that most of the team don't have, for there is no hmm.. "native speaker" in Ice-Pick Lodge... well... maybe except for The_LxR... in some sense.:)

Oh, I'm sure the task definitely requires someone with fluent English - in that case, wouldn't it be in Ice-Pick Lodge's best interests to employ a professional translator? <i>I'd</i> like to see the game released with better English simply because it's my native language, but from a developer's point of view, English is regarded as the "international language", and most games are produced in English. Surely catering to this broader market would increase awareness/sales? Am I oversimplifying things?

You're absolutly right - and IPL did employ a semi-professional translator - that's me. But you missed one small detail - Pathologic has approximately 1.200 standart translation pages of text. Meaning it's hard work and lot's of time required for a decent translation - not something that you can actually do without getting money for it. Pathologic's translation turned out bad for quite some reasons - we've lost a translator halfway through, the rest of the translation was done on the very last moment by two different agencies because of the lack of time and even the two weeks I have (with the help of Ahako) spent on correcting obvious errors such as different names in different translations didn't help at at all. The most reasonable answer was to take these errors into consideration, when doing the next game's translation - which we did. ) Also, there's a very nice person from the forum helping us out.

I'm not demanding a translation, I simply cringe when I think that this game won't be played by many people simply because the translation is bad. It wouldn't care as much if it weren't for the fact that I started playing with a second character and realized that I couldn't stomach the fact that I'm missing important dialogue and that it was always in my head. Characters didn't feel as alive the second time through also, perhaps because I thought about the translation so much. Hopefully some fan will sometime translate it. If I'm not mistaken there are Italian people who translated Planescape Torment, and that game has almost 1 million words, or so wikipedia says.

According to my calculations, the Russian version of Pathologic features approximately 1200 * 1860 = 2232000 symbols including spaces - quite a lot too. ) Well, since all the fans of Pathologic are gathered here, we can try to create a project for a fan translation - I know some people on the Russian forum, who will be interested in this prroject, and the english-speaking fans can check the texts for questionable moments and basic text logic. It just depends on how interested you will be in this project. I can even provide the texts in a convenient form and manage the translation if needed. So, what do you say about that?

That sounds like a fantastic idea, if enough people are interested! I'd be more than willing to help out - I don't speak a word of Russian, but, as you say, the English-speaking fans could point out the areas that need correction.

Hmm... Good thing I found out about this game (and its forum) when I did, as I know both Russian and English quite well (I grew up in America)
And having an international-grade translator for a father doesn't hurt either :p
I know English a bit better then he does, so we usually do Russian - English translations together (I still remember those technical papers... ARG!)
Anyways, I'd also love to see this thing translated since I still don't read Russian fast enough to really enjoy reading through large volumes of text.
Considering no one is in a hurry to translate the text, I guess we could pitch in by doing a few pages every now and then. (We don't really do anything all day anyways)

Great. ) And I did get multiple positiove responces on the Russian forum - I think we might just get this project up and running. )

2Gusar - We have a lot in common )) I've lived for five years in America, when I was a kid, so I know both languages, with the only difference, that I know Russian better.

My family came to america when i was 3 years old and we stayed there 15 years to get our greencards. (ouch!) now we travel back and forth every half-a-year.
1200 pages... my dads reaction to that was: "What?! are they translating a book or something?"
kinda makes you think twice before becoming something as arbitrary as a game script writer, where one game has just a setting/preface that you can pull out of your ass in one sitting.
or something like TES:Oblivion where in a diary the dev. team said they needed a hand cart and boxes to move the script around >.<
How do you suppose we will go about doing this? Chapter-per-person? How many people to remix this alphabet soup?
