I'm a little concerned I may have encountered a bug, but the workings of the game are obfuscated enough that I really can't tell.
I started the game, didn't understand the "put as much into trees as possible" thing and ended up dying because I had no colour available to me.
Before I died though, I had managed to fill the sister's first heart(? I'm not sure if that's the correct terminology, the 150 point thing) and she gave me a heart (in my ankle, granted the speed glyph I think). No brothers had appeared at all in this play through, although fireflies had appeared in the fireflies zone.
After I died I restarted and decided to get my garden up and running first, assuming that this was necessary to generate enough colour to survive. The brothers showed up before I had got to a point where I could start feeding the sister, congratulated me on not doing so and gave me a heart (the glyph exposes colour in rock) and a quest/trial/mission.
I went and exposed the rock, but couldn't drain the colour yet, and didn't seem to be able to progress without feeding the sister (well, there was no other obvious means to progress the story, and the brothers were ravaging my garden, so I wasn't terribly inclined to pay attention to what they were telling me). I fed the sister to fill the first two hearts?, but did not recieve any hearts in return, although the way to the next two sisters has opened up.
Should I have recieved a heart from the sister for feeding her colour?, or has the one I got from the brothers taken it's place?
Is it something else I did in the first playthrough that earned me the heart, and I'm mis-remembering it?
