I get the same error message after installation. No way am I installing DirectX 8 from the DVD when my WIndows 7 system has DirectX 11 already installed. None of my other games would work! Get your own act together.

Should I just throw the DVD away and play something else or is there a chance that somebody out there is listening?

I don't have much hope since even the support web site in the handbook (www.de.atari.com) doesn't exist.

I'm pissed off - does it show?

:x :x :x

The DX from the DvD is DX9c prolly a May build or something.

Since nothing uses DX11 the loss won't be any.

Not to mention you can have several version of DX installed, I have DX9c End user, DX9c SDK November build, and Vista DX10. Everything works.

2plongpr: You should install the DirectX distributive from the disk — Direct X has quite peculiar updates — Direct X 9, 10, 11 are essentially different DLL's, and have nothing to do with each other. So DirectX 9 might get upgrades (bugfixes, etc...) independant of DirectX 11. And it certailnly won't downgrade your version. :)

So don't worry - just install the distributive.

And if that doesn't work - post your DxDiag - I'll see what else might be wrong

Muchos grassy ass amigos

I wasn't aware that DirectX versions could co-exist (and me with a brain the size of a planet!).

The Void starts now but only complains about not sensing my graphics card settings. I'll fiddle with this now. Almost as much fun as playing games

I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260, which isn't in the file profiles.xml. Could I add it there as a cheat or is there a better way to tell the game what to do and stop it setting everything to minimum values?

I'm guessing that you can safely use the maximum settings. :)

I'm having the "Can't load renderer library" error as well. I have installed the directX and physX drivers from the disk to no avail. I am pretty sure my laptop is good enough to run Void, as I am a 3D animator and it was bought with displaying complicated graphics in mind.

I just want to say that I installed The Void on my friends computer and played it to the 8th cycle before I had to leave. It's gorgeous and horrifying - I really enjoyed the Brothers. I would have loved to have worked on this game, and I can't wait for what comes out of Ice-Pick Lodge next. :D

Here's my dxdiag:

Actually, it's easy, as in most cases only in the beginning there is some useful info (i.e. your video card, driver, audio card, OS and so on). Too bad I personally don't know much about different bugs that might occur in our game due to different configurations.
Only that PHYSX thing. Their installer installs/uninstalls driver automatically depending on whether it is already installed or it is not. It doesn't even ask, so one may accidentally remove it running the setup (i.e. if PHYSX is on one's PC already).

Please help! I really want to play this game. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the game, physX, and directX multiple times now (the driver versions that came with the disk). Why am I still getting this error? Is it something about my computer hardware? :(

Is there any way I could try to troubleshoot this on my own? What does the "can't load renderer library" mean exactly - is a problem with recognizing DirectX, PhysX, or is it an issue with the video card? Is there a way to enable more descriptive errors?

Error creating renderer may mean one of the following:

— You're not using a supported videocard.
— You're not using supported settings.
— You're not using the required DirectX version.

Programmers say that game should run perfectly well on you PC. Try to check if you have the latest driver installed. Please, post also game.log after a failed attempt to launch the game (you'll find it in "My Documents", where the game stores saves and logs).
But it seems, they do not know why the game might fail to run on a system like this. Is it only the case with "The Void", or are there some problems with other games too?

I had the same problem, downloaded Direct X 9c and installed. Game runs great. Got the message about minimum video etc, loaded hi res anti aliasing etc, and again the game runs great! Try DX 9c
Halfgild Wynac: Yes, but the problem is, this very DirectX is supposedly on the DVD with the game.
One may also try downloading bonus disk torrent (check News on the site). At least, it will let you spend some time looking through arts and listening to soundtrack

I have tried the drivers on the disk, and I have tried the most recent directX and physX versions that my hardware can support downloaded from the internet. Neither work, I have installed both types several times.

I can't post the game.log. I've looked in My Documents very thoroughly, looked in the Void folders, made hidden system files visible, and done two searches on both of my harddrive partitions for it. It seems like this alleged log file never gets made. Is there anything I can do to force a game.log to be made? Is it possible that the game is crashing out too soon for it to make one?

I have never had a problem with any other games. I had Portal and Counterstrike installed until recently, and I have Spore currently. I can run them all with no problem.

mmm... no idea but just to make sure...

1. already reinstalled the game?
2. there's a thread where you can set up custom settings (like 1680*1050 res in my case) try to check that but for example... when using the game settings, maximum AA is 4X and in the thread they set it at 8X AA, my game won't run with that AA so i kept it at 4X and that's it... so: make the rcfg.xml then set the graphic options (outside game) and compare the info of your rcfg.xml and the one they provide... (who knows if that could help)

just try to run out of ideas... the game is REALLY good... and it's worth the effort.

1. Oh yes. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the game itself four times at this point.

2. Tried that, does nothing. Out of curiosity, what numbers in the rcfg.xml file would result in the absolute minimum load on the graphics card? Maybe I've just got to get those numbers low enough that the game can run?

I wish someone else had my computer to try a comparison test - I have an HP Pavillion dv7 1020us. Maybe it's something wrong with my registry, in which case I'd need to reformat. :|

Numbers in rcfg do the same thing as numbers you set in config.exe. In fact, if you run config.exe, you will see the settings you typed in that file. But, surely, in rcfg you can type some settings which are not "supported" in config.exe (like 1680*1050 resolution, with vertical resolution being not a multiple of 4).

If you would like to check how game works on minimal setting, then just run configuration program and set the lowest resolution, no VSync, no HDR, no Anisotropy, the lowest possible lighting and texture quality. This should certainly do it :)
I wonder - is it possible that you had your antivirus on when installing the game? This error looks quite strange, because... well, your card is practically the same as the one our programmer owns. And much better than the one I had on my laptop (bought in fall 2007) - and I was making game levels and models on that laptop (well, I usually downloaded the drivers for my card from tweakforce: http://www.tweakforce.com/modules.php?n ... oad&cid=14 ; my laptop manufacturer didn't have Vista drivers until recently).

I wish I could run the config.exe, but it just gives me the same error as trying to run the game. And I don't really know what I'm doing in the rcfg - some hand-holding would be appreciated.

Tried reinstalling with pretty much every program I could manage turned off, including virus scan. Something was different this time - the installer asked me to restart the computer. I either missed that all the other times or it didn't come up. Regardless, I still have the error. It's not the virus scan. :?

Very confused...

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I STILL can't play The Void on my computer. Any new patches/suggestions/developments?

Edit: I've noticed that other people have gotten the game to run on a GeForce 9600 GT, while mine is a GeForce 9600M GT. Could this be the problem? I'll reiterate that I've had no problems with any other game I've bought and installed. Just The Void, the one game I really really wanted to play. :(

The 9600M GT should be the same as the 9600 GT, exept for a few little things, like it's only a little slower (i.e. clock speed and so) that can be neglected in this case.
As it's not really a Integrated card like the GMA's but a stand-alone card like the 9600 GT itself (just made smaller), i see no issue's either regarding compatibility.
If the game runs on a 9600 GT it should run on your mobile edition aswell.

It might not be much of a help but, I hadn't run the game entirely on my laptop befor but i now just tested it by starting a new game.. (didn't go past the main screen befor) my laptop has a GT220M so should be quite similar to yours. (Well exept for the mouse, it seems to reacts slow.. wich can make the screen go too far in the desired direction. anything to fix that?) anyway, the game runs perfectly fine on highest setting.

I didn't do any driver downloads or directx downloads, The OS is Win7 prem. aswell. with Directx 10 or 11.. not sure, i dont know how to acces Dxdiag on Win7 yet :P (don't use laptop that much)

So since it can't be your card itself, or that it's not supported. The problem should lie somewhere else..

Edit: I found it, it has Directx 11.

It is irrelevant in this case, as the game uses DirectX 9.0c. This version should be shipped with the game, though if you install from steam, you might need to download and install the latest version manually. Surprisingly, DirectX 10 and 11 may very well co-exist with an outdated version of DirectX 9.
