Hi guys
I've been waiting a long time to play The Void and I finally got a copy a few weeks ago. After playing Pathologic I espected The Void to equally amazing and surreal. And it is. Your artwork and graphics are pretty awesome and you created a great morbid atmosfere.
However the game suffers from several gameplay issues that cripple the whole experience. First of all there are too many random things in the game:
1) The appearence of color (quantity and location) seems random. I often had too much color I didn't need and no way to get the color I needed.
2)Some encounters with the Brothers seem random. They just appear when I am not ready and there is no way to prepare myself but to Load a previous game.
3)Some encounter with Sisters scattered by the map (the ones that come to us) seem random. I have no way to fill myself with Gold before they come to me. This way I cannot make the most of my color to unlock their hearths. Unless I load a previous game, of course.
These issues don't make the game difficult, they make it frustrating. A game where we have little control of what's happening, where we can't avoid getting killed by random events, tends to be annoying. Besides that, combat seems too simple: the difference between Glyphs are subtle, its hard to see whether Glyph A is better than Glyph B, so I just end up throwing color wildly, hoping it has some evect on Brother and monsters.
The use of color is a issue too. The game provides too little information of how to use color in the beggining. Only after a player has spent some hours in The Void he gets that information, realizing that all he has done was destroy the Sisters chambers because of innapropriate use of color. However, drawing Glyphs is an awesome idea, and works perfectly. The symbol detection works almost without flaws.
About level design and atmosfere, its awesome. After Pathologic, I tought that it would be impossible to create a game with a even better atmosfere. You guys amazed me once again.
I'm looking forward to your next project. I hope that the next game will have a more pleasant gameplay, I don't mean easy, just more controlable. By the way, when will we hear something about the next game?
I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this.
Please continue to amaze us
PS: I keep a mental list of the best games I've played so far. Pathologic is in 1st place, right on top of Deus Ex. No bullshit, I swear. I'm still trying to decide where to put The Void.
