Post subject:  Pausing/stuttering in buildings

Whenever I go into the theatre or town hall the game keeps pausing/stuttering every few seconds, this problem doesn't occur outdoors or in the smaller buildings. Does anyone know how to fix this (I've tried turning all settings down to minimum and running in XP compatibility mode but it doesn't help)?

Specs:
Windows Vista 64 bit
Q6600
Geforce 260 GTX (182.08 drivers)
4GB RAM

Hmm, that is strange. Could you post the contents of the 'engine.log' file that you'll find in the main Pathologic folder?

I left my PC doing that last night, unfortunately it didn't help.

However while experimenting this morning I realised that I hadn't tried disabling sound in the Game settings utility, once I did that the stuttering went away, I also tried setting sound to low quality but the game still stuttered. I'm using the onboard sound on my Asus P5K with the latest drivers from support.asus.com installed.

Does anyone know if there's anything special about the sound in the two problem areas (theatre and town hall), maybe more channels or effects or something?

I have the UK version and the sounds files are installed unpacked (there isn't a Sounds.vfs file).

I noticed that the problem only occurs after a footstep sound (i.e. it doesn't happen if you just look around) so I discovered through trial and error that if I remove the file Step_stone4_44.ogg from the Sounds folder the stuttering goes away. Unfortunately that also breaks the inventory and other windows (they stop opening). I don't think the file is corrupted because if I copy and rename one of the other ogg files as Step_stone4_44.ogg the problem still happens (also if I create a blank file with that name). So I'm stumped.

Perhaps more sound channels are used in those two locations. I know there are whispering voices in the theatre, for instance. I don't have the game installed right now, but I think there are settings in the .cfg file that allow you to reduce the number of sound channels used. I could be wrong, though.

You could also try installing a different version of OpenAL.

Thanks for the suggestions hydra9, however I haven't tried them yet because the problem is gone!

I decided to stop trying to fix the issue and instead continue to play the game, I'm now at the early morning of day 4 and the stuttering in the town hall and theatre has gone, both locations run perfectly. If I reload a save from the early morning of day 2 the stuttering returns. Whatever the cause, hopefully it won't return later in the game, but for the moment I'm not going to worry about it.

They've messed up the Control Panel, it's more difficult to setup PPPoE connection in Vista, it's almost impossible to debug such connection, Vista is much slower than XP, etc.
I work in ISP and Vista makes my work more difficult.

And one more thing: MS forces me to install Vista in order to use DX10 :evil:

Given good enough hardware I find Vista faster from XP. I change from XP to Vista 64 on the same set of hardware and never looked back to be honest.

I've just finished day 12 as the bachelor. The stuttering did come back several times: Ospina's house on day 4, the theatre on day 8 and I think Petr's house on day 10 or 11. It's very strange that it only happened in certain places at certain times but once I stopped worrying about it, it didn't impact the experience too much.

Anyway, I'm really glad I finally played this game, I don't think I'll ever forget it. Maybe when I've recovered a bit I'll try the other two characters but right now I need a break from surviving plagues and being chased by those damned rats! :)

Thanks for the awesome game Ice-Pick people.
