By day 2 prices of things have gone waaay up! I can barely afford a handful of nuts to munch on. The only way I've found to make money is to knock off as many thieves with knives as I can and rifle their bodies. This has to be done at night and doesn't seem to affect my good reputation at all. If I let them kill a bunch of towns people first, I get even more money from their bodies. Does this seem right? Does anyone know any other ways to get food or large amounts of money?

The best way is to save up and raise enough money on day 1. You can save some money on bandages and ammo, because these objects can be exchanged for water and other useless to you objects. Always look through the trashcans for empty bottles, which can afterwards be filled in the closest water barrel. That's about it.

Also you can save on food on the first two days - there are three items near the monument to the Mistress in the upper part of the town (the Horns). This should be just enough for day 1,2.

Hey LxR -- nice to meet you! I was quite late in the game figuring out the trade thing. That sure comes in handy!

I discovered another (dirty) way to get money: break into the houses using the lockpicks you get from trading with the kids. When no one is looking you can click on highlighted chests and cabinets and collect all sorts of items for sale or trade or use. It does use up quite a bit of time, however. I'm surprised my reputation doesn't drop when I do this. I wonder if the game is echoing real life with this "whatever happens behind closed doors" type of attitude.

Even without stealing, when you can't find enough kids on the streets to trade with (like at night), there are always kids running around inside these houses with goodies in their pockets -- sometimes even "powder."

Well, I should warn you, that if people see you - you'll lose reputation and will be attacked. Rambling through houses is also a method, I guess... There also is marauderism (hope I didn't misspell this, lol ) - kill the guys, that are already inside and salvage the goods - you can find rare clothing inside locked-up buildings, ammo and other useful stuff.

Most players will learn this early, but a mention seems to belong in this topic: Store clerks, as well as Gryph and the bartender, will buy items from you. The bartender will often give you a better price for some items, I think.
