Д) Decide that videogames aren’t the correct medium for your team’s grim visions, go on to sell all your computers and buy two tons of surplus hospital equipment and DIY supplies. For the next nine months nobody is seen leaving or entering your building, though the noise of welding, hammering and bestial howling continues late into every starless night.

If you chose Г you can feel smug and pour yourself a healthy shot of vodka, because that’s exactly what Ice-Pick Lodge are doing. This year should see the English version of their next game, Tension (Typrop in Russian), and while due to some fist-eatingly annoying copy protection I haven’t been able to play as much of my friend’s Russian copy as I’d like, I have played the first couple of hours. And oh, mercy.

Many folks demand to leave original voiceover. I can't seem to figure out why though.

Well, I like the original voice-acting. It would be a nice option to play the game with Russian audio, though not essential.

Anyway, great article by Quintin Smith and I look forward to the interview.

Like I said a few months back. something is always lost "in translation" or in this case, in voice over. Namely sometimes the original feeling and emotion is lost, and as you are more aware then me, Tension puts a lot of emotion in the sisters dialogue.

Fortunatly I live in a country where voice overs in the media is very very very very very rare. :D

I like original voices as long as I can understand what is being told. Fortunately, I can most of the time. IMO, the most common thing lost due to improper translation is humour which Tension is almost devoid of. Personally I can't wait to hear Tension in English.

Greetings and Salutations!

I am a lover of Pathologic and anxious anticipator for Tension and usually just lurk when around the internet. I've been active in RPS a bit lately and had an excellent comment conversation earlier today with The LxR. I just wanted to pop in and try to explain about voice overs, for me.

In any work of intellectual and emotional depth, it becomes important to maintain the integrity of the work. The original work, as published, is important. It is a realization of an idea. That idea, or group of ideas, is a piece of art and every bit of it matters. In a game, things like original artwork, textures, voice, music are all part of the original dream. Over time, patches will come up, some things changed, removed, added to, etc. They may improve the textures and have higher quality music. Good Stuff.

When you localize, however, usually a company will actually remove some of the original assets and replace them. A lot of the assets stay the same, but text and voice is usually changed completely. However, many times we won't have art assets changed. A slogan that was in a texture will eternally remain a mystery to this english speaker. That's my failing for only knowing one language well. When some assets get translated, they tend to lose something. Sometimes a joke doesn't go through. Sometimes a cultural reference is lost. When this happens, and the translation is off, then the people reading the translation get off, and it just gets off the original idea even more.

I try to always watch movies in their original language with english subtitles. Something about the way it's done in the original work in it's original language usually just sounds better to me. Sometimes it can be an improvement. Usually though, it's just better in it's native tongue.

Sorry for the rambling. I hope this helps you understand at least my perspective. I'm only one, though. :)

2Markoff Chaney: I understand you completely - sometimes the translation kills everything, thought I know 2 examples of the opposite - when the translation actually made something a lot better! (These are movies: In Brugge even though it seems impossible to make it even better, and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind - the Russian translation is positively mindbending!) Anyhow, I will look into it.

I think I was more thinking like "What would a poor translation of David Lynch feel like if you were trying to understand it?". Heh. It's hard enough to understand him in his native language. Your works feel as deep.

I know - it's one of my all time favourites, if not the most favourite. ;) I was talking about the English voices being worse than the Russian voiceovers.

Seeing that article made me feel better. I'm not the only one that wants the original Russian in there. If it's not on there upon release, how likely is a patch? I know it'd probably be big, but you could release a torrent so that the work would rely mostly on the users rather than your own servers.

Well, I would say it depends on what you call 'big'. Original game's voiceover was like 500 or 600 megs. Should the amount of voiced text increase (I can't say anything on that), the number will rise as well. Don't think it will become more that 1 gig, though. I am sure your internet shall posibly bear this.;) It may not be the case with the game's DVD, while I still hope the texts won't undergo that big of an enlargement.

Just read the article, great stuff. Can't wait for this game to be released, I loved Pathologic, even with all it's flaws. I hope The Void will come with the original voice-overs along with the English ones, or maybe made available as a download. Greetings from Portugal :)
