LOL

They even call the jumping out of a chamber into pits and stuff, a "bug".

:(

I'm becoming depressed over this.

The world needs more The Void and The Path instead of churned out FPS by the dozen like copy and paste setting and mechanism. Sure I know that is what sells, but meh.

Reviewers criticise graphics of Tension but I think there is some misconception on what good graphics are. Sure Tension doesn't have Direct X eleventy billion with pixel shader 500 and true motion ray traced real time shadows, yet the attention to detail in the level is nothing short of exquisite. I bet if Half-Life ep3 came out now with the same source engine from HL 1 none would dis the graphics.

Sure, everyone can create the space marine bad though guy number 40 billion and landscape with so much bloom you eyes fall out, and yet, I reverse to right to create maginic depressing, abstract and yet beautiful environments to Ice-Pick Lodge and Tale of Tales. I short form, anyone can create a badass space marine but it takes a true artist to create a truly bleak landscape.

Please IPL and TT, don't ever stop to do what you did on Pathologic, Tension and The Path. :(

Yep, I have to say: This review made me angry. I can't understand how he can possibly bash the music, even if it's not to his taste. Along with all his other complaints... I'm really left annoyed by this one

I know, I know, a bit overreacting.

I just wanted to see The Void shine above all. :(

And this is one of the few forums I can talk about game quality without being assault by fanboys... ironicly guess I'm a Tension fanboy :(

On the plus side, the players seem to appreciate the game. There are now five reviews on amazon.de, all giving four or five stars.

As to players liking the game. . .

I've played part of the German demo (it crashed, and I haven't yet gone back), and my impressions are mixed. [Note: I speak a little German, but I'm far from fluent.] The game was a unique and really very compelling place. However, it doesn't fit any genre, and genres help players connect more quickly with an experience: One taps into the genre's feel and that lets one more quickly access the game (no learning from scratch). The Void, however, forces the player to learn from scratch, because (as far as I know) it's unique.

And that's something I find admirable. I can see that some people would find it difficult, though.

So let's see the English version, so I can see if it works for me!

You are right, in the end the players are more important than the reviewers.

I have no hounds to unleash  And anyway, I'm in general agreement about your comments. As for this little review, it seemed very positive. The only complaint was about a couple of lines of speech that are still in Russian.

Little help in collecting reviews, Throdax.

Sometimes I think some testers (press) did not play the complete game... or did not understand it.
But here you can see again that players rated the game better that the press. The average of the rating of 20 users is "78".

Interesting. I like the part about 'turn off your phone, MSN, Facebook, everything.' I'm still waiting for someone to give it more than 75% though.

How did he arrive at 72% after hardly mentioning one negative thing? Who on earth would mark a distinctive, highly original and artistic game significantly down because it's hard to get into anyway? Apparently too many people. Of course it's hard to get into, it's NEW. Remember what that is? Jesus Christ! The gaming world is stuck in some whirlpool of adolescent macho bullshit where everything is becoming progressively safer and more homogenised, where there is such a growing contingent of older gamers who are so fed up with it that they'll embrace (and even make) the most banal of indie platform games simply because they have a different aesthetic and don't contain a gun or an elf, and along comes a game like this, a game which is unlike anything except in the way it harks back to what Looking Glass had in their prime, and the journos don't get it, or maybe they do, but they don't have the guts to risk an out-and-out reccomendation, which is what this NEEDS. Rock Paper Shotgun will presumbly go some way to redressing the balance when the English version comes out and if the game lives up to even half of what it appears it will, I'll be shouting it from the rooftops. This game will live on long after most games die out, as will Pathologic. I have no doubt about this.

You are completely right, and you said it perfectly. After all, a review score is meant to say 'This percentage of the game is good.' In fact, if we look at the colored bars used in the review summary, it looks as though the final percentage should be 85% or 90%. I don't think the '72%' matches the reviewer's personal opinion, based on what she wrote - Instead it's the 'safe' kind of review score she's required to give out in case too many readers start thinking the website favours innovation and originality over big explosions and cutting-edge dismemberment effects...

I know RPS will give some good coverage to the English release. I also think (hope) EDGE magazine will get behind this game.

[EDIT: One more thing, though. Although I agree the score should be higher for a review like this, I think the intelligent people who are interested in experiencing 'something different' will not be put off by the score - Instead, they'll actually pay attention to the words and then go buy the game.]

I am also sure that one of us over at The Reticule will give the game a good play test when the English release occurs :)
