Looking at the exception.txt stack, seems like it could be graphics related?

http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/12/9/ ... DXDiag.txt
http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/12/9/2682222/game.log - Didn't look fruitful, but here it is (hadn't run the game since the crash)

Summary:
Still crashing.

Things I've tried:
Uninstalled/Reinstalled
Installed DX off game DVD, latest off MS website
Upgraded XP to SP3, installed all windows updates
Installed latest MOBO drivers
Installed latest Nvidia drivers
Turned off all game bells and whistles, quality to lowest, AA and HDR off, audio quality to low
Installed latest PhysX drivers

If this helps, it was consistently crashing on me every time I tried to enter Firefly for the first time, but as soon as I went to the mine first, Firefly then worked fine after that.

However, just now I was playing, and it hard-locked my system on the loadscreen for Uta. Had to hit the reset switch on my case.

Great game though. Surreal, like living someone else's dream, or a long lucid poem in the form of a game.

Unfortunately, I can go to Ava's stage, but not Uta's. It crashes on me at Uta's level in the load screen everytime (though thankfully it hasn't hard-locked again, but I am getting an exception of some sort). Sadly, doesn't really look like I can play on with this bug as it stands now. :(

Sadly, it still crashes in the same fashion as before after disabling HDR.

Also updated my Nvidia drivers from 190.xx to 192.65. No luck either. Also tried running at a different resolution. Still no luck. :(

Installed the latest DirectX runtime. Updated my motherboard drivers to the latest from intel. No mas. And with that, I'm just about out of ideas.

And edited topic upon realizing it was in fact Ava's den it crashes upon entering.

This is a stab in the dark, but worth trying: Disable anti-aliasing.

Unfortunately that's been off from the get-go. :(

Mmm :(

I suppose you've tried re-installing the game?

Sounds like a prudish graphics card. Try downloading a couple of adult movies and see if starts to loosen up. If it still has trouble, swap it out for a more open minded card.

Well, I don't think that's the problem, I think I've generously filled _that_ quota. ;)

It's a 512mb 9500gt, not top end but I wouldn't think it's a problem.

Edit: Also tried the following - GPU PhysX acceleration off, detail settings in the game config to low, anisotropic filtering off, low audio quality, no vsync, lowest resolution, shaving my thighs with mayo, etc.

Nope, I guess that's all that's left for me at this point, short of something more radical.

The strange thing about the exception.txt is that it's pointing to an error in C:\WINDOWS\system32\msvcrt.dll - the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.

Perhaps you could check the version number of that .dll and see if there's an update available. I have a feeling you are using an extremely old version.

Do you regularly run Windows Update?

Fixed!

Well, bizarrely enough, reinstalling seemed to do the trick. Thanks all! Probably could've tried that one earlier.

Not fixed.

Now that Ava's stage works, Uta's does not. Identical looking exception.txt.

Just did a comprehensive windows update, installing all patches and cumulative updates, including XP SP3.

At this point I've hit a brick wall. Until I do a new windows install, or get a new PC, it looks like this game is either getting lent to a friend or parked on my shelf. Too bad too, I was really getting into it.
