Hi there,

Another problem with starting the game, I'm afraid ;)

The game loads, I get the intro (sound stutters on my system, but nevermind). I get to the menu screen, then I go to 'start new game'. I see the 'loading' screen for a few moments, then I am dumped back to the Windows desktop.

From the first glance seems like a broken installation. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Also, installing the latest WMV codecs from Microsoft's site sill solve sound stuttering problems during video intro. If you are using an integrated audio card, set the sound quality to low and lighting quality too (seems illogical, but it works) - should help.

Thanks for the speedy reply, LxR!

It's interesting that you suggest a broken installation... The first time I tried to install the game, it seemed to completely (or ALMOST completely) install, then it gave me some sort of 'packed file corrupt' type error RIGHT at the end of the installation. I loaded the game up, and had the problem I described.

So I did uninstall it. Then I reinstalled it, but this time I installed CD 1 normally, then when it was time for CD 2, I copied all the files to a 'temp' folder on my hard-drive, then installed from there.

This time, there was NO error during the installation, but I had exactly the same problem when I ran the game.

Do you think the CD *is* faulty? It seems unlikely, as there were no problems the second time I installed the game.

(By the way, thanks for all the support you're providing in these forums... :) )

It's most likely a problem with your CD, I think... Try using a copy/backup utility to backup the disk on 1x speed - if the error is recoverable it'll work just fine. You can slow down your drive speed using Nero Drive speed, or copy using Killcopy (http://www.killprog.ru). Try that. If it doesn't help, I'll send you the missing file, and we'll see if it really is a problem with the game disk, or with something else.

Thanks for the advice. I tried it, though, (made a copy using KillCopy) and still the same problem.

But I've just worked out what it *might* be!

When I bought the game, I checked the back of the box and it said 'Minimum system requirement: 256 MB RAM'

I only have 256 MB, so I thought this would be okay. But now I've noticed that the readme.txt says 'Min. 384 MB' !

Is this the problem, maybe? Is it just that I need to buy some more RAM?

That's a common problem... The game actually works on minimum req, but sometimes the system uses too much memory. I guess, there was a mistake when the publisher made the box cover... The problem is definitely RAM. Try closing as much apps and processes as posible.

I already closed down all but the essential running processes - I freed up 91% of system resources, but still the same thing.

Anyway, nevermind... I've been meaning to upgrade anyway, so I'm gonna buy some more RAM. Then I'll try it again, and let you know what happens.

In the meantime... Thanks. Oh, btw, I noticed your sig... Satoshi Kon rocks! I saw Tokyo Godfathers a couple of years ago, and it blew me away.

Did you know that he made a new movie, Paprika, recently, which will be in cinams starting March? The trailers are very promissing - looks like an insane mix of his own Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue and the Cell. I've gathered some links over here viewtopic.php?t=93&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=310 though other info is in Russian.

That looks awesome! :D I can see that Satoshi Kon's usual humour and emotion are there. Also, that is simply the best animation I've ever seen! Wow!

:cry: Still no luck! I installed another 256MB of RAM (total now: 512MB) and exactly the same problem. I re-installed the game, totally from CD (no errors this time), I re-installed DirectX and the nVidia drivers... No change... The game still quits at the same point.

Note: It doesn't ALWAYS quit with 'bakalavr.lsh'... Sometimes the logfile will end slightly earlier (e.g. at 'intro_theater_svetilnik'). But it certainly never gets further than this.

The first real problem seems to be:
> Can't load static geometry "intro_theater_object.mesh"

Any ideas? Can you send me any files to test anything?

Could you please PM me your DxDiag? (Start -> Run -> DxDiag, then wait for it to finish and click Save All Info) There's also a line there, that says, that vertex shaders aren't supported - this might be a problem. You can emulate vertex shaders using 3D Analyzer - a freeware utility, you can download it here: http://www.softlinks.ru/download/file.php?fileID=3250 Try to use the following programm options in the utility:

VendorID = Device ID = 1.
emulate pixel shader
emulate vertex shader
emulate bump maps
emulate max.sim

Maybe, use are using integrated graphics?

I tried various options in 3D Analyzer, but nothing helped. Most of the time, the game just loaded up with a totally black screen.

I've sent you a PM with my DxDiag output.

Hey LxR! I hope you're watching this topic. Thanks for your help with this problem. It's now solved :)

I upgraded my computer:

Pentium III 800 MHz --> Pentium III 1.2 GHz
256MB RAM --> 512MB RAM
GeForce 4 MX 440 --> Geforce 6600 GT :)
Windows ME --> Windows XP Home SP2

And the game runs perfectly! Just started playing it. I'm still on Day 1. So far, it seems very interesting, and the translation is not too bad. I'm looking forward to seeing what the 'transparent cat' is all about :)

Hope you'll come to enjoy the game despite some problems - it's actually a great game if learn to enjoy it's positive sides... (Don't listen to me, i'm kind of under alcohol right now, and can't quite express the thought, but I hope you'll realise the point anyway during gameplay.)

Now when I totally made no sence, i wish you luck. Should you experience any trouble - feel free to ask, or check out the official walkthrough - since i've translated it personally i can give my word, the quality is good. )
